Innovative structures

Science.

With our strong multidisciplinary team, our goal is to to develop innovative constructions that use materials in an efficient way

Construction.

Focus on load-bearing circular concrete
structures made of material-efficient components and reversible connections

Impact.

Expertise hub in the domain of circular, innovative structures

Innovation.

Strive towards a circular building sector where components can be disassembled and reused

We develop resource-efficient circular building systems for sustainable construction

About us

Multidisciplinary research at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)

At the VUB, the departments Mechanics of Materials and Constructions (MeMC) and Architectural Engineering (ARCH) join forces in this Strategic Research Program (SRP). While the MeMC team (Prof. Tine TysmansProf. Danny Van HemelrijckProf. Dimitrios Angelis) has an international expertise in design, mechanical testing and health assessment of innovative composite structural components, the ARCH team (Prof. Niels De TemmermanProf. Lars De Laet) is internationally involved in the research on innovative, sustainable constructions for the built environment with their expertise in lightweight transformable design.

Ahmed Soliman, specialized in innovative structures and computational design, is a PhD researcher within this program. In his research, he focuses on deployable scissor structures and rigid plates.

The program runs from October 2022 to October 2027 and is funded by Strategic Research Programmes (SRP) – Growth Funding.
